Rebecca Blank, the current Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, just announced exciting news for in-state students. The so-called “Bucky’s Tuition Promise” is to encourage Wisconsin high school students who think UW-Madison is too expensive to apply and attend.
What’s the Catch?
This program will offer free tuition and fees for in-state students from households with annual income less than $56,000, according to the Associated Press (AP).
When Will the Free-tuition Program Start?
The school guarantees it will begin in the fall of 2018.
Affordability for Low-Income Students
]”Many low- and middle-income families in Wisconsin simply don’t know whether they can afford to come to UW-Madison,” and “that we’re going to do everything we can to make this an affordable school,” said Chancellor Rebecca Blank.
Source of Funds
The university, as one of the top 50 richest universities in the world and with more than 2.4 billion endowments, will use private gifts instead of tax dollars.
How Many Students Will be Benefited?
The school expects to help more than 800 new students, freshmen as well as transfer students, who will enroll this fall.
Can a Tuition-free Recipient Seek Other Forms of Financial Aid?
Yes. “Participants will still be allowed to pursue other forms of financial aid such as grants, scholarships, and loans. Money from the free tuition program would make up the balance of the student’s costs,” stated by the AP.
