They worry about two things:

Reasons:

  • The Trump administration’s strident anti-immigration stance
  • Now the Trump administration is trying to slash immigrant visas, while Republican and Democrat lawmakers are introducing bills to curb the number of work visas
  • Recent violent attacks against Indians—several fatal—have raised the specter of physical danger among Indians who have fantasies of a life in the U.S.

 

Why are H-1B Work Visas so Popular to Indian Students?

  • H-1B visa program, which has allowed thousands of Indians to get high-paying jobs in the U.S. after graduating.
  • Indians received almost 120,000 H-1B visas in 2015.  That number is 70 percent of the total H-1B visas issued.
  • The job outlook in the U.S. is especially crucial for students who’ll be borrowing heavily.

India’s National TV News Broadcast Negative News about Studying in the U.S.

  • The murder of a young Indian in Kansas and the ensuing FBI hate crime investigation into the triple shooting dominated newspaper headlines and prime-time TV in India for days.
  • The father of an Indian who survived appealed to his countrymen not to send their children to study in America.
